Stability analysis of 1000 - seed weight and seed yield of some sunflower (Helianthus annuus L) hybrids under irrigation

Twenty sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) hybrids were evaluated at two irrigated locations, New Halfa and Rahad, for two cropping seasons (2003/04 and 2004/05) to estimate stability for 1000- seed weight and seed yield/plant. A randomized complete block design with four replications was used at each location. The variance of genotype x environment interaction was highly significant for both characters, suggesting inconsistency in the performance of the hybrids across the environments. The analysis of stability showed that Salih, Hysun 33 and Ka99x17 were stable for both characters under favorable environments, whereas Ka99x1, Ka99x15 and Ka99x25-2 were stable for seed yield/plant under unfavorable conditions. The regression lines and scatter points for both characters revealed that, the locally developed hybrids were stable under the environments of study, whereas the introduced Hysun 33 was unstable and its yield increased with improving these environments.
